Class Information
About Mrs. Foley
Welcome to my third grade classroom! My name is Kristen Foley. This
is my twelveth year teaching for District 87. I began in fourth grade at
Sheridan and have been at Oakland for the past seven years.
I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little about myself with you. I grew up in Decatur, where my parents still live. My mom is a teacher and inspired me to choose this profession. I attended Illinois State University and graduated summa cum laude and a Bone Scholar in 2000. A master’s degree in reading from ISU followed in 2005. This continual growth and reflection has been central to my life. I plan to continue my studies and polish my skills as an educator so that I can in turn help children become lifelong learners.
My husband, Scott, is a high school English teacher. Mr. Foley loves to write. He has published two short story collections, The Imagination's Provocation: Volume I and The Imagination's Provocation: Volume II as well as two novels, Souls Triumphant and Andropia. Together we like to play with our daughter, watch movies, and go on vacations. Two of our favorite vacations were to the beautiful state of Maine and lively Las Vegas.
Emma Claire Foley is the newest addition to our family! She was born on July 9, 2008, and is such a blessing to us! She celebrated her three-year birthday this past summer. She is such a sweetie!
In my free time I enjoy playing with my daughter, photography, exploring technology
(websites, SMART Boards, etc.), and working in the yard. My husband might add that I like to
clean and organize. We joke about that! Thanks for taking the time
to learn a little about me. I look forward to learning about all of the
students in my classroom this year as well as their families.

Your child will have me for language arts (reading, writing, spelling, English), math, and science. Mrs. Alfeo will teach social studies. Please be aware that your child needs to come to school prepared with the necessary tools for learning. This includes supplies, textbooks, and homework assignments. Our classroom is a fun place to learn! I encourage teamwork and supporting one another as we strive to accomplish goals. This year will be exciting and adventurous for both you and your child.

Behavior Policy
Be respectful. The students who do not follow these rules will receive the following consequences.
1. Verbal reminder Students are rewarded for behavior that meets or exceeds expectations in a variety of ways. Some rewards include prizes, free-choice time, and special classroom jobs. Misbehavior and incomplete assignments will affect your child’s ability to join us for field trips, assemblies, recess, and special activities. Please review these policies with your child. I appreciate your continued support at home.

| Supplies Your child should have the following school supplies for third grade. I prefer that your child not bring Trapper Keepers, watercolor paints, bookbags with wheels, pens, or mechanical pencils. It is not necessary to bring multiple packages of supplies. Your child should bring replacement materials to school when he/she begins to run low much later on in the year. Our desks are small. Large supply boxes, jumbo supplies, and extra supplies will not fit. Please see the suggested sizes for items below. Also, every students uses specific folder colors for subjects. Therefore, it is important that your child have the six colors listed below. I do require that each student have a personal pencil sharpener that collects shavings. It will be used to sharpen No. 2 pencils and colored pencils daily and is a must. Additionally, all students in my class will need TWO 1" three-ring binders with a clear plastic front to be used as a homework binder and a portfolio. I will make an insert sheets these binders, so you do not need to write your child's name on them. A pencil pouch will be needed for the homework binder as well. I will provide your child with an assignment book and plastic homework/note folder for the homework binder. Please write your child's name on all of his/her supplies with a permanent marker before bringing them to school.
