Welcome!

We're publishing our stories.  Visit the "Student Work" area to read some stories students selected to publish online.

Let me give your a brief tour of the typical English block.

~Introductory Language Activity - We start class with an activity to engage thinking skills as related to language use.

~Poetry - We read a poem together.  Students select lines to discuss.

~Vocabulary - From many poems, we select vocabulary.  We also collect words from a BJHS vocabulary program (Wordly Wise).  After we've collected several words, we complete various vocabulary study activities.  I also challenge students to begin using these new words in their writing.

~Mini Lessons - Before Writer's Workshop, I present a mini lesson on class structure or the writing process.

~Writer's Workshop - Students have time to write in class (15-30 minutes).  Workshop ends with students sharing what they wrote, learned, etc.

Where is grammar?  Grammar falls in several places.  (1) Language Activities; (2) Writing instruction; (3) Direct instruction to review/introduce new concepts.
