Our Homework Assignments

My homework policy...I believe 3rd grade is generally a challenging year for many students. The curriculum is created so that the students will hopefully enjoy the learning process, and learn a large amount of new information throughout the year. The students work very hard at school everyday. In order for students to continue to enjoy learning, I feel that they deserve a break from school at night. Now this doesn't mean that their completely off the hook! Optimally the students should be reading at home for twenty minutes almost every night. They should read aloud to others, read silently, and be read to frequently.
I also feel that home is a perfect opportunity to practice math facts, (such as subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division). Telling time, and working with money are also great things to work on. This can be done formally by sitting with your child and working with them, or ways to pass time in the car, at a restaurant, or running errands. If time is spent at home either on reading, math, or a combination of both most nights of the week, I feel that is challenging enough for both parents and children.
I usually send home one piece of homework each week, and there are weeks that no homework is directly assigned from me as well. During certain parts of the year, more than one assignment is sent home. It just depends on the pace in the classroom, and the difficulty of the curriculum at various times in the year.
There will be times where the students will need to use time at home to complete certain projects, and I will let you know about those in advance.
