WELLNESS - PARENT NOTIFICATION
Dear Parents and Guardians:
During this semester of Health Class that your son/daughter is taking, we will be teaching a unit on Abstinence Education. We will strive to stress knowledge about making healthy lifestyle choices. Concepts that will be stressed include the following: good decision making, assertive communication skills and promotion of sexual abstinence as a healthy viable choice for today's teen.
We are all too familiar with the problems presented to our children by the temptations of life, including pre-marital sex; the results of which could lead to out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and emotional trauma. Bloomington High School has agreed to cooperate with a new education program Project Reality, designed to help pupils learn how to protect themselves better from risky and potentially destructive activities. The program will be presented by specially trained teachers from Catholic Social Services who received a grant funded by state and local agencies to pilot this program in area schools. In accordance with grant stipulations, there is not religious content to the materials that will be covered. This program makes a special effort to solicit parental support and advice. This part of the instruction will cover 5 class periods. As part of this instruction, students will be asked to complete two similar questionnaires about relatively personal attitudes. The answers to these questionnaires will be kept completely confidential. The questionnaires will be used by evaluators to analyze the operation of this course for its further improvement. Because of the wholesome nature of this program your child will be asked to participate and complete this questionnaire, unless we receive written objection. If you send this confirmation back stating that you do not want your student to participate in this course then they will be sent to the library and assigned written reports that will be due everyday.
We strongly feel that you as parents and guardians have the main responsibility in teaching your children about their sexuality. We only want to add to that by giving your child positive factual information. We respect family values and hope this can be a time for you and your son/daughter to communicate about this issue.
If you have any questions we welcome and encourage you to contact Ms. Brady, Mr. Loy and Mr. Bauman. You may also contact them at their e-mail address, which is bradymp@district87.org, loyr@district87.org, baumant@district87.org. Please feel free to stop in during parent teacher conference day to look at the material we will be covering. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Mary Pat Brady Bob Loy Tony Bauman
