Little Bit About Me

My name is Joy Mucci.  I was born and raised in Champaign, but wanted to live in Bloomington since I was in the 4th grade (!).  I attended ISU for my undergraduate degree, and both the U of I and The American College of Education for my graduate degree.  I have taught 5th grade for 17 years, 4th grade for 1 year, and Pre-K for 1 year.  I was also a parent facilitator for 1 year.  All of this has been done at Irving School.

While I enjoy teaching all subjects, I will have to admit that social studies is my favorite.  I really love American history, especially studying the civil war.  I enjoy doing simulations in social studies so that it is more interesting and more realistic.  We use a curriculum called History Alive.  It includes many exciting activities and simulations that really do make history come alive!

My husband Mike and I have two sons, Nick and Nate, a daughter, Jordan, and a daughter-in-law, Jackie.  All are now adults out in the world!  You may hear some stories about my kids as the year goes by.  (They know I do this.  They usually insist that I make these stories up!).  You will also probably hear some interesting stories about my two dogs and two cats!

I have some very unusual collections.  You'll find out about these as you get to know me!  Former students can fill you in on some of these as well!  I can frequently be found hanging around Barnes & Noble. I love reading and have an amazing amount of books!  I also love to drink coffee, so the combination makes B & N a  perfect  place for me, (when I'm not at Starbucks)!

I have been called “dynamic” and “exotic” by former students.  (I think this means I am loud and unusual, both which make for some excitement!)  Rarely do my students have an opportunity to doze off.  I will keep you awake, entertained, and  hopefully engaged, in our classroom activities!
