Expectations

  • Students need to be in class on time with the required materials.  Materials needed are always
posted outside the classrooms.  Grades are affected if students are not prepared for class.

  • Homework should be completed in a quality fashion and turned in ON TIME.  Students are
expected to record assignments in their Daily Planners (1st planner provided, 2nd planner may be purchased for $5) and share this information with parents.  It is your child’s responsibility to get the assignments written down during roundtable each morning.

  • Students need to use time between classes carefully.  Plan for locker and bathroom trips!  Please make us aware of any medical problems.

  • Further classroom guidelines will be discussed with students on the first day of school.

  • FAQ

  • Grades:  Your child's grades should never be a surprise to you as your child may request a hardcopy of his/her grades once a week.
  • Detentions:  Why did my child receive a detention?  When does it need to be served?  Please refer to your purple Student Handout on page 11 which states, "A teacher may assign a detention for a variety of infractions up to, but no longer than one 1/2 hour after school.  Students/parents receive 24 hour notice" - If the detention is issued on a Monday, then the detention should be served the following day.  We understand that extenuating circumstances with transportation may arise and are willing to try to help if possible. However, repeat offenders will not be given the same consideration as first time offenders.  There are NO lunch detentions because this would require us to give up our lunch time to sit with your child.

  • Homework:  How can I find out what my child's homework is?  Homework is written on the assignment board and posted on the web.  It is your child's responsibility to copy assignments/homework from the board into his/her agenda daily.  If this isn't happening, you may look online under the section called Assignments.
  • Bullying:  My child is being bullied, what will be done about it?  Bullying is taken very seriously!!  Please make us aware of any problems your child is having, and we will take care of the problem.  Even if you want your child to address the issue him/herself, make us aware so that we can be proactive.  When contacting us, the following information is extremely important:  Via email, please notify both teachers AND administration (Mr. Whitcomb).  This will help us to better solve the problem so that everyone is aware of the issue.

  • Extra Credit:  My child is not receiving a grade that he/she is capable of receiving- can they do extra credit to boost their grade?  Extra credit is given throughout the entire year and is offered to every student regardless of grades or missing assignments.  No extra credit will be given to boost grades for final quarter grades or at any other time.  I strongly encourage students to take advantage of extra credit when it is offered.

  • Birthdays:  Are birthdays celebrated?  Feel free to send treats for your child's birthday.  We love birthdays so much, we even celebrate 1/2 birthdays for students having birthdays in the summer.

  • Hallway/locker/restroom Passes:  How many passes can my child receive?  Students are given two passes for each day their planner is filled out completely and signed by a parent for a total of 10 per week.  These passes may be used for items left in their lockers or to go to the restroom.  Students should feel free to go to their lockers and the restroom during passing time.  Students who choose to forge parents' signature forfeit their right to use passes.

  • Summer School:  Students must pass 75% of their classes in order to be promoted.  If a student does not pass, they may still pass to the next grade provided they pay $150/class to attend summer school.  They must pass summer school. Parents may not request their child attend summer school if they have passed the required number of classes.  Receiving a D in a class constitutes as passing- An F is the only non-passing grade.

Positive Reinforcement Time - Positive reinforcement time is a way for the 6J Team to get together and do some fun things during the school day to reward students who meet the following criteria in any given quarter:

  • Receive Cs or better as their final grade for the quarter
  • Receive no referrals (behavior, unserved detentions, three or more tardies
  • Receive no more than two detentions

There will be costs involved with each of these activities, and your child will be made aware of the details at the end of each quarter.  If your child does not meet the requirements, then they will remain in the building with one of the two Team teachers not attending the activity.  They will be responsible for completing the usual work.
