4.8 Differentials

Objectives:  At the end of this lesson you should be able to

  • Understand the concept of a tangent line approximation
  • Compare the value of the differential, dy, with the actual change in y, Dy
  • Find the differential of a function using differentiation formulas
  • Estimate a propagated error, relative error, and percent error using a differential

Homework:  Read and take notes on 4.8 (p. 271-275), paying special attention to Example 7 and do P. 276 # 4, 6, 9, 14, 18, 24, 27, 29, 32, 33, 40, 45, 59 - 62, and 35

  • Write a general solution for a differential equation
  • Use indefinite integral notation for antiderivatives
  • Use basic integration rules to find antiderivatives

  • Use a change of variables to find an indefinite integral.

  • Use the General Power Rule for Integration to find an indefinite integral.

  • Use a change of variables to evaluate a definite integral.

  • Evaluate a definite integral involving an even or odd function. 

Activity...Sample Problems from the SmartBoard!  Make sure to look at problem #8... You sometimes have to go to extremes to get everything in terms of u!!!

Buddy Homework:  Read/take notes on 5.5 (p. 331 - 339) and do (with a partner!) p. 340 # 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34, 35, 41, 45, 48, 51, 54,  57, 60, 63, 66, 69, 72, 75, 78, 81, 84  and review even and odd functions and how to tell if a function is either even or odd symbolically (p. 26).  Then learn a shortcut to evaluating an integral of an even/odd function and be able to explain why/how it works!
