Goal:  Build a Roller Coaster out of K’nex that will make a complete loop.  Your car needs to make it from the beginning of the coaster and back to the beginning and begin again.

Teams:  Teams can be made of 4 – 5 team members.  At least one female and one male must be on each team.

 Procedure:

1.       Plan out  your coaster.

2.       Build your car.

3.       Build your coaster. (50 points) Begin the coaster with a piece of track that will pull your car to the top of the first peak.  Your coaster track may include loops and other special design features of your choice.

4.       Using graph paper and assume that your track is linear instead of  “circular” for this stage, graph distance on the track on the x-axis and height on the y-axis.  Use cm as your unit of choice.  (25 points)

5.       Test your car on the coaster.  Use stop watches and your graphs to find:

·         the average velocity for your car on your track. Include your calculations. (cm/sec) (25 points)

·         the maximum and minimum velocity by graphing distance vs. time on a graph.  Note where the car reaches these velocities on the graph and show your calculations. (25 points)

·         the interval where the acceleration is the largest and the least and justify how you know this.  Note this on your graph. (20 points)

6.       Complete the information sheet (20 points)  and Evaluation/Reflection Sheet (25 points). Attach your graphs and calculations to the back of the information sheet to turn in on May 27.  Evaluation/Reflection Sheet should be completed by each individual without other team member input and turned in separately on the 28th.

 7.       If your car completes the track and continues at least once more without help, you may earn extra credit by :

·         Having the tallest peak

·         Having the fastest average velocity

·         Including loops

·         Having the Longest track

·         Special features

8.       Testing of your coaster for a grade will take place on May 27, 2002.  All graphs and other information must be handed in at the beginning of the hour or your coaster will not be tested and no grade will be given.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE GRADED!  Work efficiently and plan carefully.  50 points as a Project Grade:   and 25 points will be put into each of the homework, participation, and test categories.

 9.       Team evaluations are due at the beginning of Thursday, May 28th.  Coasters will need to be disassembled and put back in their tubs by Thursday, May 28, 2002 (10 points).
