COOKING WITH FRACTIONS

Teacher Page

Introduction:

Not all people are chefs, but we are all eaters.  Most of us need to learn how to follow a recipe at some point in our lives.  To create dishes with good flavor, consistency, and texture, the various ingredients must have a relationship to one another.  For instance, to make cookies that both look and taste like cookies, you need to make sure you use the right amount of each ingredient.  Add too much flour and your cookies will be solid as rocks.  Add too much salt and they'll taste terrible!

  Task:

Your job over the next few days is to become familiar with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions so you can become the "master chef" of fractions.
By the end of the week you will develop the mathematical skills needed to be able to increase or decrease any recipe that fits your feeding frenzy.
So put your chef's hats on and Follow the Web Quest guide below for each day's activities. Your teacher will begin each day with a lesson so you will gain a taste, and then you will sample fractions on your own. Let's get cooking!

Conclusion:

Bravo! You have now completed your course on Cooking with fractions!
Now that you are a "master Chef" be sure to ask mom before you try some concoctions of your own. Remember to use the skills that you have learned when using fractions to convert recipes so that your creations have good flavor, consistency, and texture!
                                              Bon Appetite!
