Problem - What about
that Freshmen Football
Practice Field?

The freshman football team is getting a new practice field and it is on the Empire Street side of the school in the grassy area west of the parking lot and east of the sidewalk.  Mr. Moore, the coach, is worried about potential injuries to his players because of the hill and is also wondering how much area he has to run plays in.  Here are your tasks…

  1. Find the angle of depression from the parking lot to the sidewalk using a clinometer.
  2. Since Mr. Moore wants to layout a rectangular field and wants it to be no closer than 5 YARDS from any source of concrete or the trunk of any tree, find the largest rectangle that he will be able to make for his playing field.
  3. For extra credit, calculate the fraction of area of a regulation size high school football field the players will have to practice on based on your answer to #2.

Materials that you’ll have to work with:  100 meter measuring tape, 8 stakes, clinometer, string, calculator
