Materials Engineer

While being the materials engineer it was important for me to find out about the materials such as the paper and glue. Paper is usually determine by grades and basis weights.  As for the grades there are five basic types:  bond, offset or uncoated book, coated book, text, and cover.  The basis weight, of what people usually look for, varies depending on the grade. The weight would be written as 80#(pounds) and it refers to 500 sheets of paper.

When making paper stronger you could go about in different ways.  Corrugation is one of different ways of going about making it stronger.  As you can see in the picture above, we corrugated the triangle so it could hold more weight. Another common way of making paper stronger is changing the grade of the paper (more information was provided above about the grade).

The difference between adhesion and cohesion vary in a way.  Adhesion is the binding force between 2 different materials.  However, cohesion is the binding force between two similar materials.

White glue (Elmer’s glue) is made by synthesized (made by man) chemicals.  Those chemicals are originally made from petroleum, natural gas, and other raw materials found in nature.  The way that the glue.  A thin application takes a few minuets, however, the more you put on the longer it will take to dry.

Interview:

I had the chance to interview a constructor or a former constructor in which I choose my dad, Jose Martinez, who constructed all through college.  Although his information could of of been different then what you hear today, I still found some great information to help my group and I on our project.  Some information I found out about building is that a triangle is a popular shape that is strong.
