Also to build a longer lasting structure, you can build it with materials or in ways that will cushion the structure. This will absorb shocks and other movements.
We explored using triangles because of their rigid form. The sides of the triangle put force on one another, pulling and/or pushing. This keeps the triangle standing.
During my interviews I also asked how tall the structure should be, what materials buildings are built from, and how wide the base should be.
Interviewing Craig Wiist really had me thinking about all there is to consider. How much of a difference it makes when you have the right length and height. How sturdy a triangle is compared to a rectangle. I learned so much information that helped my group.

My job for our group is the design engineer. As part of my job I had to consider and take in many different designs. Mostly those found in nature, I had to consider different shapes, and understand materials that are used.
I had to think about many structures that you can find in nature, such as bee hives or spider webs. Something I noticed about bee hives is that they build them in pattern designs, which seem to hold up the structure for a long time. Spider webs seem to be built in patterns as well.
Corrugating your structure can also make it stronger. If you compare cardboard that is corrugated to cardboard that is not you can see the difference. Items that must endure harder forces and are more fragile are packaged in corrugated cardboard boxes. |
