| The grade of paper is what kind of paper it is. The weight of paper is how many pounds 500 sheets of it weigh. If 500 sheets weighed 20 pounds then its weight is #20. The file folder paper grade is offset and has a weight of about #60. This means that the paper is pretty strong. You can make paper even stronger by reinforcing it. You can do this by reinforcing it with layers or by putting it into designs that have more structure. For example you could make it stronger by folding paper into many equal sections which is called corrugation. | Adhesion is the ability to stick to the surfaces to which it's applied and cohesion is the ability to stick to itself. This is how the glue works. Glue is made of various chemicals, but it is also made of things called polymers and tackifiers which are naturally sticky and make the glue adhesive. It works by when the glue is exposed to air it starts to dry and it sticks to both objects. |

Certain
materials each have different load bearing capacities, which is the
amount of force that the certain material can withstand before
failure. A manila folders load bearing capacity is much different
than other materials, but to make up for this difference you can
design your structure to withstand the amount of force being applied
to it. The best way to do this is to make sure that you are
spreading out the weight, if all the weight is in one spot the
folders will collapse, if you spread out the weight then the folders
will hold more weight. Interview on Dan W. at Prairie Woodworks. |
