Student Led Conferences

This year the 8B team will be conducting conferences that are directed by the student.  For many of us this is a change from when we came to conferences and the teacher told us about the assignments, tests, and behaviors that determined our child's grade.  With student directed conferences you get the same information, only it will be from the person responsible for turning in the work, studying for the tests, and being on task... your son or daughter.

Because this may be new to you, we would like to outline what the conference will be like.  First, the conference will be scheduled in advance.  When you arrive, your child will introduce you to their roundtable teacher and then sit down and go through the conference packet with you.  When going through the packet your child will be telling you what grade they earned in each class, why they earned that grade, and what they can do to improve their grade.  In addition to this information, they will show samples of their work, and set two improvement goals.  This portion of the conference will last about thirty minutes and give you an overview of how well your child is doing.  When finished, you are invited to spend the next forty five minutes talking with any of  your child's teachers about specific questions or concerns.  We ask that you DO NOT go to the other teacher's classrooms until this 45 minute period as it will disrupt the other student lead conferences.  As always, if you have a question or need to schedule a longer private conference on another day, please let us know.

These conferences give our students the opportunity to reflect on their work, build self confidence, assume more responsibility for their work, and develop plans for improving the quality of their work.
