:: BIO :: Teaching is my second
career. I worked for over 10 years as the associate director for
campus dining services at Illinois State University. During this
time, my son was diagnosed with Autism. As I began to educate
myself about his disorder, I began to become more interested in
teaching. With the support of my husband and family, I went back to
school to earn my second degree in Special Education. My son was
fortunate to be fully included in regular education classrooms and has
flourished as a result. He is now attending Heartland Community
College. I can attribute his academic success to excellent
teachers and the availability of assistive technologies. I am just
finishing my 4th full year of teaching special education as a 6th grade
LD resource teacher. I believe that it is important to give
students the tools and resources which will enable them to participate
in the regular education curriculum with their peers.
