Introduction

  Get your thinking caps on; it is time to have some fun!!  Your rich uncle visited your house recently, and when you showed him your room, you mentioned that it is not exactly the room of your dreams, but it’s OK.  So as an early birthday present and as a reward for being his favorite relative, he is spoiling you with a one-time gift of $10,000.  His challenge to you is use the money to create your dream room spending as much of the money as possible without going over the $10,000.  And one more thing, any money that you do not spend goes to your younger brother or sister.  Be creative and let’s get to work!

  Task

  Given a 10 feet by 12 feet bedroom (with a standard 8 ft. ceiling), you create your dream room.  You must:

  • Make a scaled blueprint of a 10 ´ 12 room, including 1 door, 2 windows, and a closet door;

  • Add furnishings;

  • Include all wall, window, and floor coverings;

  • Collect pictures or advertisements of the purchases made to verify prices/sizes;

  • Create an itemized list of all purchases and total costs;

  • Prepare a final presentation of your dream room; and

  • Stay within the $10,000 budget.

The Process

  • The bedroom that you will be working on is average in size, 10 feet by 12 feet.  Be accurate with your measurements.

  • To begin the assignment, you need to start with your blueprint.  Decide on the scale that you are using and draw the outline of the room including 2—3 ft. by 3 ft. windows, 1 door to the room as well as a closet door.  Standard doors are also 3 feet wide.

  • Everything that you are adding to the bedroom must be to scale.  Be sure to add the scale to the bottom of the blueprint and label each item.  That is very important to figure out what the actual size of each item will be.  This blueprint is a visual to be used during your presentation and may be constructed on graph paper.

  • You will have a budget of $10,000.  You must be creative in order to stay within your budget.  It is very important that you do not use more money than already allocated to you from your uncle.  Do not forget, any money left over will be given to your younger brother or sister!!

  • Now for the fun……Use the resources listed or others that you may know of to “shop” for items that you would like in your bedroom.  Don’t forget to consider the window/wall/floor coverings as you are starting with an EMPTY and BARE bedroom!

  • As you “purchase” items, cut out/ print off pictures of the items you’ve chose as well as any size or price information about them.  These will be needed for the final presentation.

  • Update your dream room purchase worksheet as you purchase items.

  • When all purchases have been made and the blueprint is finished, you must organize your information into a presentation format of your choice.  Suggested formats include power point, posters, brochure, or web page.

  • Your final product must be presentation in speech format to the rest of the class highlighting the unique aspects of your dream bedroom.
