I am taking a moment to share with you what we have been learning in class.  The students have been passed off on Hand hygiene. They have also had in-class lab practice on the following: Unoccupied bed-making; Intake and Output recording, simple Math calculations and Vital Signs. In addition, they have discussed &/or practiced transferring techniques; feeding; and measuring heights and weights.  The Heimlich maneuver was discussed and simulated.

The state mandates a minimum number of hours that must be obtained in order to sit for the Competency Exam in May.  Therefore, PLEASE encourage your student in regular attendance.  If they end up with less than sufficient hours, they will forfeit the privilege to take their Certification exam. As you may recall from the Welcome letter, they must also maintain a “C” average to sit for the exam in May. The date of the Certification Exam this year is May 15th.  This is my birthday—my present will be a 100% passing rate! JJ

So far, we have covered: Introduction to Healthcare Agencies; Work Ethics; Communication with the Healthcare Team; and Preventing Infection.  We have had guest speakers on the topics of Infection Control; Elder Abuse; HIPAA certification and an Ombudsman (advocate for residents in Long term care).  In addition, the students have been learning the physiological and emotional changes that take place in the elderly.  It is exciting to hear stories from them as they begin to apply their knowledge in the clinical setting.

The students seem very eager to learn.  I am thoroughly enjoying the students and I want you to feel free to call or e-mail me if you have ANY questions, comments, or concerns.

(829-8671 ext. 5187)(cell # 309-533-3247)(toumal@district87.org).I will attempt to give you an up-to-date letter as I deem necessary.  In the meantime, let me know if I can be of any assistance to you or your student.
