Departmental Requirements

The English Department at Bloomington High School welcomes you to Sophomore Speech.  During the next 18 weeks your student will be required to complete approximately 7 formal and informal speeches.

One of the most important skills discussed in class is the ability to complete a task.  Therefore, to receive credit all assigned speeches must be given with written documentation attached.  Failure to do so will result in NO CREDIT for the class, and the student will repeat the class to receive the credit needed for graduation.

To earn credit and a passing grade, the following standards must be met:

-         All speeches must be given on the day assigned by the instructor.  Late speeches cannot receive a grade higher than F.  Students who are absent on the day of the assigned speech must have an approved absence for full credit and MUST be prepared to give the speech on the day of return,  if the instructor can make room in that day’s round.  If not, the student will be informed of a make-up day.

-         All speeches must be given in front of the class during a regular class period.  (No before or after school make-ups)

-         All written work must be submitted on the same day the speech is given.

-         All speeches must meet the MINIMUM time length in order to qualify for evaluation.  A speech that fails to meet minimum length may be redone for a grade no higher than C.

-         All speeches must not exceed the maximum time length by more than 59 seconds.  Exceeding this grace period of time results in one letter grade lower than the evaluation grade.

-         All speakers must make eye contact to qualify for credit.

-         All outlines must be written in notes, key words, and phrases.  No sentences unless an instructor has assigned a script for a specific type of speech activity.
