Postcard Example

December 2, 1609

Dear Grandfather,

This is my second week straight without any nourishing food.  Ever since John Smith left, Powhatan has refused to give us any food.  All the people of Jamestown are starting to call this “the starving time”.  We all have come to the conclusion that Powhatan is trying to drive us away by not giving us food.  So many neighbors are dying, I fear there will be less than 60 of us left by Spring.  I hope you are doing well.  I will try to scavenge for food until John Smith, our leader, arrives once again.  Maybe Jamestown will prosper again in a few years.  Write back soon.

Love,

Additions:

Perhaps one day we will free ourselves from the English and from our own country.  Just like the Plymouth Colony, we are starving now through the coldest of seasons.  Except for of course they are much further North in Massachusetts where the winter are colder and much harder to bear.  One day I know we will have food again.  A first thanksgiving, like Plymouth had Squanto helping them, and I know someone will help us.

Q2 Recital: The Preamble to the United States Constitution
We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Q2 Field Report: Movie should be about ‘soldiering’ (could be before combat, during combat or after combat)—something that will help you ‘learn’ about/ better understand Veterans’ Day.  Please find a movie you have not already seen.

Advice: User the same format (see 'K)' below) as Q1, but don’t be stingy with the notes, do explain what you learned from the movie—what do you now ‘get’? and clearly explain the DV – movie connections.  (Civil War may not go with all movies—tell me how/ why it is connected.)

K) Field ReportsStudents are expected to independently select and view a movie about history/ government each quarter.  The movie may be a documentary or simply a film with social studies content.  In order to receive credit, students must submit a Field Report that includes:
1) notes (at least ½ page)
2) an explanation of two things learned from the movie (descriptions of new understandings, not restatements of notes)
3) an explanation of how the movie connects to two Déjà vu Terms.

Each section of the Field Report is worth 3 points:

Q2 Postcard from the Past:
Use the same format (see 'L)' below), but information for the event and connection must come from Unit Two in the text.
I will expect images to ‘present’ ideas that demonstrate your understanding of the postcard subjects.

L) Postcard from the Past: Students will use the textbook to create a postcard message from the past that includes:

  • reference to a specific date, place, event, vocabulary term and person that convinces me you understand how they are all connected
  • an explanation of how the event connects to some other event in history
  • a prediction of how the event will affect the future (based on the postcard date)
  • a student created image for the postcard with a caption

Postcards should be created on a folded sheet of paper with the image on the top half and the message on the bottom half.

You must score 15/15 on the Q1 Identification Paragraphs before you can earn any points for Part II.
For the second quarter, you should explore your topic (research) in order to answer the following questions:

2) What did you find (2 hours research?) about your topic? (Describe and summarize research results)
3) What is the main idea (thesis) you want to share with peers? (medium length)
4) Why are your topic and ideas important for others to understand? (Medium length)
5) In terms of organization, how do you plan to organize and present your information and ideas? (extended response)

Work received this week will have the possibility of being returned and resubmitted for two cycles.

Here is a rundown of the major points remaining preceded by the estimated degree of difficulty:

1  Déjà vu Spiral (5%) (should be done if it has been kept up to date)

1  STTA Candidate Position Video (4%) (completed in class)

2  Soldiering Field Report (4%) (movie time plus about 20 minutes)

2  Mr. Soule Facebook Profile (4%) (class time provided)*

2  Quarter 2 Reaction (4%) (75 minutes)

3  Preamble Recital (4%) (memorization time plus 15 minutes)

3  Unit 2 Postcard (4%) (60 minutes)

4  Learn & Teach Research (4%) (up to 180 minutes with research time)

*was due on Friday November 21st and is not currently listed in the gradebook, but should be in this week.

Students who did not score at least 80% on the Déjà vu Test must study and retake the test until they score 80%.

Partial points can be earned for any of the assignments.  Assistance is available in E and R.

Field Report advice: watch the movie and take notes then bring the notes to me and I can guide you through the last two sections.

Postcard advice: be sure to pick a topic from Unit 2 (not chapter 2), read well enough to understand your subject and create an image that matches the ideas you have developed in your postcard.

Preamble advice: work on this a bit at a time and it may come easier and be sure to get the image, importance and historical fact points.

Learn and Teach advice: see me to narrow your topic and get research process started.

Reaction advice: take it one step at a time and this assignment is not very difficult, but be sure to take the time to complete each step well.

Preamble Terms Homework
→Choose any two of the preamble terms that we have covered.
1. We the people in order to form a more perfect union, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.
2. Establish justice.
3. Insure domestic tranquility.
4. Provide for the common defense.
5. Promote the general welfare.
6. Secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
→Once you have chosen your two terms you need to find a picture/or article that links to each of the terms.  So that means one picture or article for each term.
→This CANNOT be from the same paper that we used in class.
Attach your articles/pictures to a paper that explains to me in two sentences why you think the picture/article goes along with the term.

Chapter 14 Extended Response:

Slavery was an issue that divided our nation and pushed the U.S. to war.  From chapter 14 choose an event that you think was the strongest push to war.

Events to choose from:  The Wilmot Proviso, Popular Sovereignty, The Debate over California, The Compromise of 1850, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Kansas-Nebraska Act, Bleeding Kansas, The Dred Scott Decision,  John Brown Raid, Election of 1860, Southern States Secede.

Make sure you answer these questions
-What event did you choose?
-How did the North feel about this event?
-How did the South feel about this event?
-How did this event contribute to the tensions of war.
