Article Exercise Examples

EW Connections:

Write a 2 sentence statement using the following format:

Sentence 1) Refer to specific content from the article, a related Essential Word, and an Essential Word clue.
Sentence 2)
Write an "I" statement that refers to the material in a specific way and demonstrates your understanding of the material as it relates to the Essential Word.

Example: The article was about a tougher law against drunk driving, which relates to the Normalcy clue of Prohibition.  I think that tougher drunk driving laws are a good idea, but the complete ban on alcohol during Prohibition went too far.

PMI:

Do 1 plus, 1 minus, and 1 interesting statement for the article that has three sentences and follows this format:

Sentence 1) Write a general statement about the topic with a 'because'.
Sentence 2)  Write a cause and effect statement based on specific content in the material.
Sentence 3) Write an "I" statement that demonstrates that you understand the material.

Plus Example: It is good that tougher laws are being passed because alcohol related accidents are a serious problem.  Increasing the penalties for repeat offenders will make it less likely that people will continue to break the law.  I know that I would not want to risk extended loss of my license, fines, or time in jail.

Minus Example: It is bad that tougher laws are being passed because it will cause some people to lose their jobs.  Tougher laws may cause some bars to close which will result in a loss of jobs for their workers.  I think it is too bad if people lose their jobs, but the need for safety is more important.

Interesting Example: It is interesting that people can't be sure whether they are breaking the law because the amount of alcohol that can be legally consumed before driving varies by weight, gender, and individual.  Uncertainty over who has broken the law puts pressure on the police to make decisions about whom to arrest.  I think that it is interesting that unlike most other crimes where a person knows they are breaking the law, the drunken driving law requires a test to determine whether a crime occurred.
