1)  Much of African American history was not written down, but rather was passed from one generation to the next orally.  Why do you think this was the case?
2)  Define "discrimination".
3)  Who was Harriet Tubman and what was her connection to the Underground Railroad?
4)  The Blues evolved from spirituals.  The music is still very personal and soulful, but without religious themes.  Think of five words that could be used to describe Blues music.

Example 1

Example 2

I want students to learn about the truth, not just propaganda about the first world war but what actually happened, the bad side is what I want people to see.

I believe that students should learn about this because some have only been taught "oh our troops did so well back then".  That is incorrect, thousands of troops died from things like trench rats, and body lice and if we would have given a little more effort maybe we could have saved one of the soldiers.  I want students to understand that war isn't just about winning you have to fight many many things and not all of them are human.

"tell students about the bad points of trench warfare, what the soldiers had to face when the bullets weren't flying."

EW Book Backside Notes  -- EW Book is to be done independently—copying = cheating = no credit.
You need a note for each clue for each EW.  When you have a note for each EW clue, you may do an EW Image of Understanding (see below).

Updated format (11/5):

1) Find and record a one-sentence note in the text (include page number) for each clue for a selected Essential Word.
2) Develop a visual that communicates to me that you understand the note and how it fits with an Essential Word Clue.
3) Develop a visual that communicates to me that you understand how the Essential Word Clues fit with the Essential Word.
4) Present the visuals to me and explain the connections.

EW Image of Understanding  Must be done with notes for the EW first.
Create and present an image for 6 EW’s that convinces me that you understand all the clues and the EW.

Original format (no longer expected):
Recommended format is 3 sentences:
Write out the your along with the page number in the text where it was found.
Describe the connection between your note and an EW Clue.
Describe the connection between the note and the EW.
(Convince me you understand the note, clue and Essential Word)
