Classroom Economy System

At the start of the school year, each student is given $100 (play money) to start their classroom savings account. Throughout the year, students can earn and loose money. Their money is kept in a savings account folder where they learn to fill out a transaction form very similar to what you may see in a check book. They also learn to use the words credit, debit and debt as it applies to their situation.
Once a month, students are given the opportunity to place a snack bar order. Once a quarter, they are given the opportunity to purchase a determined amount of items from the classroom store. On the other hand, students can also loose their money by not showing appropriate behavior, not following direction or paying attention, failing to do and/or turn in homework assignments, etc.
At the end of the school year, students are listed in order on paper from highest to lowest according to their savings account balances and the person with the highest amount (and so on) will get to turn in their entire savings account for one of the major items that have been purchased for the end of the year auction.
The Six Pillars of Character
Stevenson students are expected on a daily basis to show that they are students of great character. They are recognized for their acts of truthfulness, respect, responsibility, fairness, kindness and overall citizenship. Recognition comes in the form of awards given during each awards celebration and daily acknowledgment from all staff members in the building. Student pictures are taken with the rest of the students that have also been recognized for the same award.
