Our Mission
At Stevenson School we are “Building a Community of Lifelong Learners”. Every day we in the Learning Center work to make this a reality. If we break that vision down and look at each word, we can see how this goal might be carried out in meaningful ways.
Building: The comedian Gallagher had an interesting view on buildings “Why do we call them buildings when we’re already done building them? We ought to call them builts, or better still crumblings.” Building is an action verb. It requires activity. People are working to build skills, knowledge and understanding., and it is never-ending There cannot be the attitude “okay, we’re done”. The process of building is continual and current. When we become better at developing our skills, knowledge, and understanding we develop communities.
Community: In our community we help each other. We look for ways we can grow together. We look for ways we can extend our community. Increasingly we find that we define our community by the circumstances we are in. Communities can be as small as a classroom, and as broad as the world. With the click of a mouse we can go from one to the other in an instant. Regardless of the size, the community’s goal is to make the community better. We enliven our communities by sharing our skills, knowledge, and understanding.
Lifelong Learner: Lifelong learners are committed to improving themselves. They recognize that their life is enriched when they work to learn new things no matter what age. Discovery leads to new questions. Like the building process the Lifelong Learner suggests one who is active, current, curious, and diverse in their search for new ideas. Likewise the lifelong learner recognizes their responsibility to share their knowledge.
The following steps will make the Learning Center a key part in achieving the vision of “Building a Community of Lifelong Learners”.
Learning Center Goals
We will:
• Share our love of reading and work to help others learn to love reading.
• Make the Learning Center an active place. Encourage individuals, small groups, classes, parent and community groups to use the LC and its resources.
• Make the Learning Center a place that prods curiosity with its collection, displays, and lessons.
• Build our community through an appreciation of diversity. Make this evident and visible in our collection, displays and projects.
• Make the Learning Center known to the worldwide community by sharing our ideas and stories through the LC website.
• Be aware of standards established for learning, literacy, information literacy, and technology and establish an environment where those standards are known, and all learners strive to achieve them.
• Develop collaborative projects with classrooms, other schools, and other learning communities.
• Evaluate trends in libraries, literacy, information literacy, and technology to see how our school might best use these new ideas.
• Promote the use of technology to explore, organize, and create.
• Seek opportunities to share knowledge through workshops, small group sharing, and individual instruction.
