COVID FAQs in District 87

The following information addresses frequently asked questions and concerns surrounding school closures and the Covid-19 Coronavirus. The health and well-being of our students and staff is one of our top priorities at District 87. We are committed to transparent communication if anything impacting our staff or students changes. 

How long will schools be closed?
Gov. Pritzker has announced all Illinois schools will be closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year. Following guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education, District 87 is implementing Remote Learning Days during this time.
All District 87 buildings are closed to the public. From 9 am to 12 pm on Mondays and Thursdays, all phone calls to schools will be forwarded to the District 87 home office where a staff member can be of assistance.

What are expectations for Remote Learning Days?
The purpose of Remote Learning Days is to maintain strong relationships between teachers and students, and to continue providing learning activities for all students.
Students in PreK-5th grade will receive Remote Learning packets electronically or by mail from their classroom teacher. Teachers will give feedback on assignments to maintain relationships.
Junior high and high school students will receive information from teachers about Remote Learning assignments through their district-issued device. Teachers will communicate expectations regarding assignments.
All teachers will establish office hours when they are available to work with students/parents and answer questions.

Is the district providing meals to students?
Yes. District 87 is providing multiple meals to students twice a week at various grab-and-go locations. Learn more on our Meal Page.

What is the status of the Graduation Ceremony?
In-person events through the end of the school year, including BHS graduation, will not take place as originally planned. Seniors were surveyed and a task force explored every available option. Because students were most in favor of hosting a face-to-face ceremony, a tentative date of December 13, 2020, has been reserved at Grossinger Motors Arena for a traditional graduation ceremony.
In addition, BHS is hosting a drive-through graduation event at the school on May 24 so students can have a chance to celebrate the end of their senior year.
District 87 will continue to make safety a priority during these events, and proper health measures will be followed.

How can high school students learn more about college applications and scholarships?
Guidance counselors and BHS teachers are prepared to help students with questions regarding transcripts, letters of recommendation, and scholarship applications. Visit the guidance page for more information.
