Week of 2/4/2019

Posted by Kerrie Huizinga on 2/5/2019

Brrr! It was cold last week. Due to our unexpected school cancelations some classes are a little ahead of others.

Kindergartners are listening to One by Kathryn Otoshi. In the computer lab, the kindergartners will continue practicing how to type in a Word document. We will focus on color words from the book.

First Graders are continuing to listen to books from the 2019 Monarch Award: Illinois' K-3 Readers Choice Award list. This week's book is A Different Pond by Bao Phi.  We will compare this fiction story to a non-fiction text about ponds. Some non-fiction text features we will focus on are content page, bold words, glossary and index.

Second Graders will do their SLO Type 3 assessment. The goal of the SLO is to show how much they have learned about doing research, identifying key details in an informational text, inserting and formating images and changing text size and color. The students do all of this to create a document that expresses their knowledge and creativity.

Third Graders are using the research topic they chose last week to further their understanding of search engines and the importance of citing their sources. Our prefered search engine is Kiddle, because it is easy and safe to use. Feel free to practice at home!

Fourth and Fifth Graders will begin doing research with WorldBook Online. They will each chose their own topic, read an article, record 3-5 facts using their own words, write an "I wonder" question about their topic and create a citation.
