These three students, who recently arrived in the United States, have shown significant growth in their English and are ready to move on to a different class! 🌊🏊The Sheridan Swim School is now in session!🌊🏊 Some of our sharks have the opportunity to take to the water and learn to swim at the YMCA every Monday for the next 6 weeks. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Sheridan School, all our swimming sharks have been provided with swimsuits, goggles, swim caps, and a handy bag to carry it all in! 🩱🥽🧢🎒 The looks of pure joy as the kiddos entered the water for their first lesson was priceless! This morning Edwin "Sarge" Sargent, Executive Director at The Western Avenue Community Center, was a guest speaker in the African American History class at BHS. Sarge has been a mentor in D87 for a long time, a former volleyball coach, and has also worked with D87 through Project Oz.
During his visit today, Sarge engaged juniors and seniors in a thought-provoking discussion about future job opportunities, mental health, and the value of their "intellectual capital" and shared his powerful spoken word poetry with the students.
